Building a Trailer

Always have a plan with a project like this. With a clear plan and goal this project will be a snap and you will have a great trailer that will be perfect as well as functional.

In building a trailer, you need to have an axle kit. You also need to consider the weight capacity, the frame, the height and the suspension. All these depend on the type of trailer that you will build.

The first step in building a trailer begins with the main frame. The pieces of the main frame should be cut down and welded. You need to use a good saw and a good welded to accomplish this task. You have to make sure the flatness and the square shape of the frame. Next is that you need to position the axle depending on the type of trailer you are building. If you are to make a tilting trailer, then the axle must be positioned towards gravity.

The third step is to calculate the tongue weight. It is advisable to use 5% of the weight of the trailer to be your tongue weight. This is enough to trail after unloading the goods. Make sure that the axle is placed at the center along with the frame. This is the most critical part of building a trailer that you should never ignore. You have to make sure that it is at the center part of the trail.

For you to make sure that your tracking is straight, make sure that the distance of the wheel and the hitch is equal. Remember that the axle must be square and should be placed at the center of the frame. Next, when the frame is positioned upside down, you can mount the tongue crossing a bar; this should be positioned ahead of the axle. You will also notice a solid and round bar which is somewhat a square tube forming the tongue.

You will also notice 2 mounting tabs having half inch holes. This will do the pivot action of the trailer. Next step, you have to attach the latch to prevent tilting of the trailer. You should secure it so that it won’t fall. You can use some small rods to serve as the fenders; the use of low heat can help weld the rods to the system. An angle iron can also be used to secure the fenders and also it can serve as mounting points. Lastly, you need to make the back portion of the trailer. You can do this using the angle iron welded together. When you are done, remove all the rust on the surface and start painting the trailer.
